What is a TIFF file?

Is anything lost when a TIFF is converted to another lossless format?

No pixel data. TIFF stores the image exactly rather than approximating it, so a conversion between two lossless formats is reversible and can be repeated indefinitely without degradation. What can be lost is everything around the pixels — colour profiles, transparency, animation, embedded metadata — because support for those varies far more between formats than the pixel storage does. TIFF is a container more than a codec: it can hold uncompressed, LZW, ZIP or even JPEG data, at up to 32 bits per channel, with multiple pages in one file.
Why do scanners and archives produce TIFF?

Because it holds the captured image without deciding anything for you — no lossy compression baked in at capture, and room for the metadata a document workflow needs. That makes it the right format at the point of capture and a heavy one to distribute, which is why archives keep the original and hand out converted copies. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require.
Is the text in a TIFF still editable after conversion?

No — it is rendered into the picture along with everything else. Live type is a property of the working file, and every delivery format stores finished pixels, so a typo spotted after export can only be fixed by going back to the original and exporting again. That is the reason to keep the layered file as the master and to treat each flattened copy as disposable output rather than as the document.
Why is my TIFF so much larger than the same photo as a JPG?

Because it is keeping every pixel, and in a photograph almost no two pixels are the same. Lossless compression works by finding repetition, and grain, noise and gradients offer it very little, so the file stays close to its raw size. On a screenshot, a logo or line art the same compression is spectacular. That split — superb on flat colour, wasteful on photographs — is the whole story of when this format is the right one. TIFF’s flexibility is its weakness — two TIFFs can be structured so differently that software reading one fails on the other — and files are large.
Does TIFF keep a transparent background?

Yes — the format stores a real alpha channel, so cut-out logos, product shots and overlays keep their transparency instead of arriving on a white rectangle. Converting to a format without alpha is where it goes wrong: the transparent areas are filled with a solid colour, usually white or black, and there is no way back short of masking the subject again.
Is TIFF the right format for screenshots and line art?

Yes, for exactly the reason it is the wrong one for photographs. Interface chrome, text and hard-edged graphics are large areas of identical colour with sharp boundaries, which lossless compression handles efficiently and lossy compression smears — the tell is the faint halo that appears around lettering once a screenshot has been through a photographic encoder. Keep screenshots here and convert only when something downstream insists.
Can TIFF hold CMYK colour for print?

It can, which is why files from print workflows sometimes look strange on screen: the colours are specified in ink percentages for a press rather than in light for a monitor. Most web-facing formats are RGB only, so a conversion has to translate, and the translation is approximate — saturated cyan and orange shift most. For anything heading to a printer, keep the original alongside whatever you convert.
Does it matter that TIFF is over thirty years old?

Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert. TIFF is the Tagged Image File Format from 1986, and it is the format scanning, publishing and archiving industries standardised on.
Is camera and location metadata kept when I convert a TIFF?

It is carried across where the target format supports it — camera model, exposure, capture time, and GPS coordinates if the device recorded them. That last one is worth a thought before publishing: a photo straight off a phone can carry the exact location it was taken. Strip the metadata during conversion when the image is going somewhere public.
Do I need Adobe software to open a TIFF?

For reading, no — the format is documented and widely implemented, and plenty of tools open it. For the full feature set the originating application is still the reference implementation, and files that lean on its specifics can differ elsewhere. The conversion here needs no Adobe licence and no local install at all.
Why does a TIFF not display in my browser?

Because browsers implement a short list of image formats and TIFF is outside it — it belongs to a scanning, print or editing workflow rather than to the web. The file is not damaged; it simply has no decoder in the page. Converting to a web-native image format is a one-step fix and normally makes the file substantially smaller as well.
