What does the DOC to XLS converter actually do?

It pulls the tables out of your DOC and writes them out as XLS. This is a table extractor, not a document converter: headings, paragraphs and images in the DOC are left behind, because running prose has no meaningful form as spreadsheet cells.
What if my DOC has no tables in it?

Then it cannot be converted, and the converter says so instead of pretending otherwise. Where there is no table there is nothing to put into XLS, so you get a clear error asking for a file that contains at least one table - not a valid-but-empty spreadsheet.
Where did the body text of my DOC go?

It was never part of this conversion. Only the tables are extracted into the XLS. To keep the writing, run the DOC through a document conversion - DOCX, ODT or TXT - rather than a spreadsheet target.
How does the converter find the tables in my DOC?

It depends on the source. A DOCX or DOC stores its tables as real table objects, so they are read directly and exactly. A PDF stores no such structure, so the tables are detected from ruled lines and column-aligned text on every page.
Does it extract every table or only the first one?

Every one. The full DOC is scanned and each table found is written into the XLS; nothing is skipped because it appears late in the document.
Will this work on a scanned DOC?

Only if the DOC has a real text layer. Table extraction reads text and its position on the page; a scan is a picture of a page, so there is nothing to read. Run OCR on it first, then convert the searchable result to XLS.
Is the formatting of the original table preserved?

The structure is - rows, columns and the values in them. The decoration is not: fills, fonts and borders are not carried into the XLS, and merged cells are resolved into ordinary ones so the data stays machine-readable.
Why was I told to use .xlsx instead of .xls?

Because the legacy .xls format physically cannot hold the table: it is capped at 256 columns and 65,536 rows. Rather than truncate your data silently, the converter names the limit you hit and points you at .xlsx, which has room for about a million rows.
Is XLS the right target for my DOC?

It is if the DOC is mostly tables and you intend to work with the values. It is not if you want to read or edit the document, in which case DOCX, ODT, RTF or TXT is the conversion you are looking for.
What does DOC to XLS cost?

Nothing for ordinary use - upload the DOC, get the XLS back, no sign-up. Paid plans exist for larger files and heavier batches rather than for the conversion itself.
Can I extract tables from several DOC files at once?

Yes - drop them all into the upload area and each one produces its own XLS. Files with no tables are reported individually, so a bad file in the batch does not disguise itself as a good one.
What happens to my DOC after the XLS is generated?

It is deleted. Conversions run in isolated workers and both the uploaded DOC and the produced XLS are removed within minutes; no human sees the contents. Details are at /privacy/.
